UNDERSTAND THE SIGNS

Water meter moving when everything is off

Unexplained meter movement can help point towards a hidden water loss.

If the meter appears to register flow when nobody is using water, first check for appliances filling, toilets running or other automatic use. A shared supply may also complicate the reading. Persistent unexplained movement is useful information for a leak investigation.

Signs worth noting

  • A flow indicator moving with taps closed
  • Increasing readings overnight
  • A suspected leak between the meter and stop valve

What happens next

Record readings and the times they were taken. An engineer can consider isolation checks and the supply arrangement to distinguish internal use from a possible external supply leak. Only operate valves you can safely access and do not force a stiff valve.

Before you contact us

Tell us whether your meter serves only your property and where the inside stop valve is. If a supplier has already made checks, keep its findings for the visit.

From the findings to the fix

Meter behaviour is a clue about water passing through the supply, not a precise location. We use it with tracing and testing to investigate the affected section. You do not need to dig or open floors to gather initial information.

For residential work, the £1,195 total includes investigation, access, the plumbing repair, parts and materials, testing and a report. The £100 booking deposit is deducted from the total. Commercial instructions are quoted separately.

Decorative and remedial reinstatement after access is excluded. The repair workmanship comes with a 12-month warranty. We explain the job before the appointment is confirmed.

GOOD TO KNOW

Your questions, answered.

Does a moving meter always mean an underground leak?

No. A running toilet, an appliance or a shared supply may account for it. The investigation helps separate those possibilities.

How does the £100 deposit work?

First, contact us about the leak. Once the job and appointment are confirmed, we send you a payment link for a £100 booking deposit. This is deducted from £1,195, leaving £1,095. Sending an enquiry does not take a payment or confirm an appointment.

Will you need to lift floors or open walls?

Detection helps narrow down the source before access is made. Some leaks require floors, walls, ceilings or external surfaces to be opened so the pipe can be repaired. We explain what is needed and aim to avoid unnecessary disruption.

Can I claim through my insurance?

We provide a detailed Trace & Access report for you to submit to your insurer. Acceptance and reimbursement depend on your policy, excess, limits and insurer’s decision. Check any approval requirements with your insurer before work begins.
