Knowing the likely route of a concealed water pipe can make leak detection more focused and access more considered. Pipe locating equipment can help identify accessible metallic services or trace a signal where suitable. We use it with property information, visible connections and other leak detection methods to build a clearer picture of what may be below a floor, garden, path or driveway.
How pipe & route locating works
Where the pipe material and access conditions allow, a traceable signal is applied or detected and followed along the surface. The apparent route is then compared with meter positions, stop valves, plans and leak-detection findings. This can help guide acoustic listening, tracer gas investigation and a targeted excavation or opening.
- 1
Start with the layout
Meters, stop valves, manifolds and any reliable plans help establish where a pipe may run.
- 2
Trace where suitable
The available pipe material, connection points and signal conditions determine which locating approach is appropriate.
- 3
Compare with leak evidence
The route is considered alongside sound, gas or other findings to plan the next investigation step.
When this equipment can help
- Private water main and underground supply pipe route investigations
- Planning a more targeted access point before plumbing repair
- Understanding possible pipe routes beneath gardens, paths and driveways
- Supporting leak detection where property records are limited
EXAMPLE INVESTIGATION
An uncertain supply route beneath a driveway
The shortest line between the meter and house may not be the route the installer followed. Extensions, repairs or shared supplies can complicate the picture. Route tracing, together with available plans and accessible connections, helps build a better basis for investigating the pipe beneath the driveway.
Building the evidence with other methods
Acoustic listening becomes more useful when the likely route is understood. Correlation requires accurate information about the section between sensors. Tracer-gas readings also need a considered view of the pipe route and surrounding ground.
Not every pipe material or installation is traceable, and nearby services can complicate a reading. The detected route is useful evidence, not a substitute for safe service checks or a guarantee of depth, ownership or exact pipe condition.
Compare leak detection methodsPreparing for an investigation
Tell us about any known buried services, recent building work, meter moves or available plans. Clear access around the meter, stop valve and suspected route helps us investigate efficiently.
Tell us the property postcode, when the symptoms started and what has already been checked. Useful details include changes in water bills, boiler pressure, the location of damp patches and any recent building work.
Contact us about your hidden leak
We investigate and repair residential pipe leaks from our Windsor SL4 base, with appointments across the surrounding service area. Homeowners and residential landlords can enquire about the £1,195 package; commercial premises receive an individual quote.

Your pipe & route locating questions
Can all plastic water pipes be located electronically?
No. An ordinary electromagnetic locator relies on a suitable conductive path or signal source. Plastic pipe without a suitable tracing arrangement may require a different method.
Does locating a pipe also identify a leak?
No. Route information supports the investigation, but further checks are needed to identify evidence of water escaping.
Do you also repair the leak?
Yes. We combine investigation, access and the plumbing repair in one residential package. We explain the proposed access before work begins and test the repair afterwards.
How does the £100 deposit work?
First, contact us about the leak. Once the job and appointment are confirmed, we send you a payment link for a £100 booking deposit. This is deducted from £1,195, leaving £1,095. Sending an enquiry does not take a payment or confirm an appointment.
